The Business of Acting - Talent and Skills?

The Business of Acting - Talent and Skills?
There is a significiant difference between talent and skill. Success in the business of acting, rarely has anything to do with talent. But it does have everything to do with the ability to aquire skills in four key areas.

Actors can be there own worst enemy . Don't be one of them, take an objective look at how you work Do you want to move fromone job to another, from one play to another, or do you want a career, do you want to be a movie star. If you do then it takes a lot of work and commitment to your goal.

Many actors do not realize anything about the business of acting, it takes more that just talent to develop an acting career. If it was easy everyone would be doing it! But with guidace and good informaiton, direction and resources it can be achieved.
There is a big difference between an acting job and an acting career, and if you want the later you need to learn about the business of acting, but it isnt something you can learn by reading one article, its a process.

There are 2 kinds of actors that we come a cross. Young, vibrant, enthusiastic, people eager to grab their place in the spotlight, yet they have no reaL concept that they will have to work hard to get there. They are actors who are seeking others (agents, managers, casting directors) to help them get from where they are to where they want to be. Without owning any repsonsibility of who they are going to get there,

Then there is another kind of actors who have already been working in their field, yet they are not happy with what they hace achieved and they feel stuck. They are actors who ar quick to blame others for where they are at (agents, managers, directors) in the career slump tney are in, yet they have not stopped complaining long enough to realize that they alone are responsible for their own career, not their agent, manager or casting director.

I have discovered that many actors, especially recent college or university graduates, have a sense of entitilement, a sense that opportunity should just open up to them, This is a dangerous attitude. Any career in any field worth having, requires passion for pursuit, and the ability to know that there is plenty for you to still learn and absorb. and the development of critical skills that will help take you beyond that first break.
There are some fantastic resources on the business of acting, written by professionals, for emerging professionals. Dare 2 Audition is opening a new bookstore, before xmas 2010 having reviewed many acting books over the years. We will be listing some selected resouces, so check them out!
